Emancipation Day recognizes Canada’s history of slavery and discrimination and marks the abolishment of slavery across the British Empire. To commemorate Emancipation Day, we will be celebrating outside Cambridge City Hall from 3-7 pm. We will have an exciting line-up of entertainment and activities for people of all ages all afternoon.
We will begin the day with a pan-African flag-raising ceremony. We are excited to have educational opportunities including a 'History Corner' run by local historian Peggy Plet, and a Fireside Chat with a number of local Black community leaders. The Toronto Caribana Arts Group and the Fiyah Brigade Rhythm Section will be joining us for an education and entertainment performance on the history of music, rhythm & Caribana.
This event will allow the community to come together and celebrate through education, music, dancing, and movement. We will have the Guyanese Fit Chick join us to get the crowd energized, an African drumming workshop and fun children's activities run by Idea Exchange in the Children's Area, including Limbo, dominos and a bike race.
We are thrilled that the local band eKhaya will be performing at 6 PM. Coming together from different tribes, and lands and weaving the sounds of many nations, Zimbabwean, Jamaican, and Canadian into a musical tapestry, the songs of eKhaya have graced many stages and festivals.
We will have a variety of food trucks everything from the islands of Jamaica to Berlin, Germany.
There will be something for everyone! We look forward to seeing you there.
