Being Eco-Friendly in Downtown Cambridge

Earth Day is a day when we celebrate and appreciate our planet. Earth Day has now been celebrated for over 50 years and continues to encourage us to appreciate and protect our home, planet Earth. According to Earth Day’s official website, this year’s theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.” This year’s theme is focusing on uniting us on renewable energy to triple clean electricity by 2030. Although it is easy to feel overwhelmed when trying to be more eco-friendly, it is important to remember that we do have the power to make a positive change whether it is through clean energy or other efforts. This year to celebrate Earth Day, we are highlighting the many different ways Downtown Cambridge is eco-friendly. Historic Galt is home to House of Bamboo, a clothing store that offers ethically sourced garments made from sustainable materials, Thrift Stores which sell pre-loved clothing and furniture, and The Cambridge Farmers Market which is abundant with local produce, plants, honey, animal products, and many other goods.

Eco-Friendly Clothing

House of Bamboo is a Green Lifestyle brand. House of Bamboo believes in only offering products that are kind to people and the planet. Their focus is to provide apparel and home products that are sustainable, environmentally friendly, and ethically and socially conscious. In the House of Bamboo’s store you can find many products made from bamboo, hemp, and other natural fibers. House of Bamboo also prides their selves on having clothing that is size-inclusive, hypoallergenic, and made to last. Many of their products are also Canadian-owned or produced. Check out the House of Bamboo website to learn more!

Thrifting

In recent years there has been a rise in the popularity of thrifting. One of the main reasons for this is to combat the environmental damage of fast-fashion. According to the Thrive project, thrift shopping helps reduce the amount of clothing that ends up in a landfill, increases the conservation of natural resources, and reduces carbon emissions by 25%.

When it comes to buying second-hand, Downtown Cambridge has an abundance of choices. Whether you’re shopping for pre-owned furniture, clothes, or toys, Historic Galt has many options to choose from such as RPM Thrift Store, The Recovery Room, and Encore Threads and Treasures. If you are looking for pre-loved items, these stores are a great place to explore.

Cambridge Farmers Market

Supporting sustainable farming practices is easy when shopping at the Cambridge Farmers’ Market. When shopping at the Cambridge Farmers’ Market you can expect to find food that is locally grown, organic, and in season. When supporting sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices, you are also supporting local Ontarian farmers! It is amazing to know that doing something as simple as purchasing produce from the local market has such a strong positive impact.

Overall, there a many small ways to make a big impact and Downtown Cambridge is a great place to start!
